In The Color of Water by James McBride James was a curious kid, as a kid he wanted to know more about God. One day when James was on the way home from church James asked if God was black or white. Ruth replied, "Oh boy... God's not black. He's not white. He's a spirit" James didn't reply understand her statement and asked what color God's spirit was. She then said, "It doesn't have a color, God is the color of water. Water doesn't have a color" (McBride, 51). This quotes says that no matter what your religion is, your god is the color of water, which means that it can be whatever color you would like it to be. I chose this quote because it showed how much of an open mind James' mom had for thinking that it doesn't matter whether your god is black or white.
